Biography

Robert McQueen was born in 1806 at Kells, Kirkcudbrightshire to James McQueen and Mary Nay. The Old Parish Record for Kells show he was baptised on March 13th 1806.

He married Mary Robson of Rerrick. They had five children and lived at Cumstoun (Compston) Lodge, Twynholm, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland.

(Thank you Jenni Smith-139022 for providing name, birth and death dates for Pap's grandfather and grandmother!)

The 1841 census shows the McQueen family resident at Cumston Lodge, Twynholm, Kirkudbright, Scotland.

Head of the house: Robert McQueen age 35, a Wood Forester. Mary McQueen age 34; Mary age 12; James 10; Grace 7; Joseph 3 and young Robert age 2 months. All born in Scotland.

This confirms Robert's wife's name was Mary and if his age was 35 in 1841 he was born around 1806. The 1851 census of Twynholm gives Robert's birth place as Kells, Kirkudbright. From this the birth record was found in Kells parish register, giving his exact birth date and his parents names.

Son Robert McQueen's marriage certificate confirms his father's name and profession so we know for certain that the Twynholm McQueens are our family!

Headstone no. 132 from Twynholm Old Church reads:

Headstone no. 132. "Sacred to the memory of Robert McQueen who died at High Lodge, Compston, 29th June 1889, aged 83 years. And his wife Mary Robson, who died at Ingleston, 26th March 1895, aged 87 years. And of William McCreadie, their grandson, who died at Greenslacks, Borgue, 14th Jan 1920, aged 65 years.

Quick was his summons to depart, no fond words from his loving lips impart, in seeming health at noon, but ah at eve, God called him home he could not live.

And of Isabella A. McQueen, their grand-daughter, who died at Moatcroft, Twynholm, 20th August 1948, aged 80 years. Also Mary Edgar, who died at Arden, Twynholm, 18th March 1932, aged 57 years, for 14 years a faithful and devoted friend of the family."
