Biography

Anne was born in Inverasdale, Parish of Gairloch [1]

The birth record omits her first name, but she appears in the family at the correct age/year in the 1881 census [2]

Her parents were illiterate. The 1855 birth record has Roderick McRae who describes himself in various records as fisherman and farmer, which occupations were often combined around the coast, and Isabella MacKenzie. Anne was their third child. The birth record shows that Isabella's parents were both born in Malvaig and had married in Gairloch in 1848 but this record has not survived.

Anne became a domestic servant. She returned home in 1879 when she was pregnant with her daughter Catherine. In the 1881 census she and her daughter are living with Anne's parents still. She is described as Former Housemaid.
