Biography

John McWha was born on April 14, 1858[1] in the United States.[1][2][3] He came to Canada with his parents and they were living in Camden township, Kent county in 1871[2] In 1881, in his early twenties, John was living in Dresden, boarding with his brother Eyre at the home of Wesley Braddon, wood turner. His occupation was baker, same as his dad and brother.[3] He married May Ribble, daughter of the prominent local businessman Asa Ribble, in 1885. He was listed as a confectioner on the marriage certificate. His brother Eyre witnessed the marriage, as did May's sister Amanda.[4] The following year, their son William was born.[5]
By 1891, John and family were still living in town, but he now listed his occupation as farmer.[6] By 1901, John and family are living in Dawn Township on their farm.[1] Alice Louise arrived in 1902 as a baby sister for the teen-aged William.[7] In May 1907, William married Edna Carscallen in Sarnia.[8] In 1908,[9] John, May and Louise followed May's sister Amanda to Victoria, British Columbia. John was still listed as a farmer.[10] Although their son William and his young family initially remained in Ontario,[11] they would eventually join them in British Columbia.[12] John's daughter Alice worked as a buyer for the Hudson Bay Company. In 1927 she married Earl Pollock.[13]
John died in Victoria, British Columbia in 1938.[14]
