Biography

John was born on 25 June 1896 in Scranton, Pennsylvania.[1] He was the son of John McWilliams and Mary Gaffney. His attendance at Syracuse University was interrupted by his service in the Navy in World War I; he was in the Naval Reserve Force but did not see action.[2] He returned to Syracuse afterwards as part of the class of 1924.[3] He married Marion Crouse Klock in Syracuse on 12 April 1924 and Elizabeth Laing Foss in 1948.[4][5] With Marion he had two children, John and Marian. John died in Detroit, Michigan on 18 April 1961.[6]

Research Notes

  • Family name normally given as McWilliams, but John appears to have preferred MacWilliams.
  • Mother's name (Mary G. MacWilliams) is given as contact in WWI draft registration, although Mary Gaffney McWilliams died of typhoid in 1912.
  • There are records for a John J. McWilliams, born 21 January 1896 in Pennsylvania, died 15 September 1962, also in Pennsylvania. This is not the same person.
