Samuel McWilliams was born in Martin's Ferry, Belmont, Ohio. He married his wife, Margaret Martin, in Martin's Ferry, Ohio in 1823. Then they moved to Wayne county, Ohio about 1830. In 1840 they moved to Piqua, Miami, Ohio where Margaret's parents had previously moved. Samuel worked as a miller for a short time, then boated for several years, after which he was engaged in buying improving, renting and selling residence property in Piqua. He died there in 1880.

1850 CENSUS: Spring Creek Township, Miami county, Ohio (page 329, left side) shows Charles Stewart, age 32, male, occupation - farmer, owns $4000 in real estate, born in Ohio, living with his brother John Stewart, age 35, and several other people in what appears to be a boarding house (dwelling #213). His two children, Caroline age 3, and William age ,1 are living just a few houses away (dwelling #205) with their maternal grandparents Samuel McWilliams, age 43, male, occupation - farmer, owns $1800 value real estate, born in Ohio and his wife Margaret McWilliams, age 40, female, born in Ohio, along with a William McWilliams, age 24, males, occupation - boatman, born in Ohio and Martin McWilliams, age 9, male, born in Ohio, attending school.
Note: Spring Creek township merged with Piqua City as Piqua grew beyond it's original boundaries.
1870 CENSUS: Piqua City, 3rd Ward area, Miami county, Ohio (FH Film 0,552,743) page 517. Samuel McWilliams, age 64, retired [Givier ?], real estate valued at $12,000; personal belongings valued at $3,000, born in Ohio. His wife, Margaret, age 60, keeping house, born in Ohio; and their grandson William Stewart, age 21, clerk in [Giviery ?], born in Ohio.
