Biography

John Edward McWilliams was born 25 December 1880 in Lima, Adams County, Illinois to John McWilliams and Adelaide Sellick.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]

John married Emma Matilda Braley sometime in 1900.[1] A second marriage happened 28 October 1904 in Centerville, Appanoose, Iowa.[2][4]

John and Adelaide were living in Marceline, Linn, Missouri in 1900, along with their son, John and his new wife, Emma.[1] John Sr was working as a day laborer and John Jr was working as a coal miner.

In 1910, the McWilliams were living in Bellair, Appanoose, Iowa.[8] Listed in the US Census at the time were John E, working as a coal miner; Emma; William L; Edward V; and Jearl.

John was still in Appanoose County at the time of the World War I draft registration.[7] His address was in Mystic. He was mining coal for himself. He is described as of medium height and build, brown eyes and hair.

The John McWilliams family was living in Walnut, Appanoose, Iowa in 1920.[9] The household included John and Emma, and their children William, Edward, Jearl, and Glyn. John and William were coal mining.

In 1925, John and Emma were living at 1901 Capitol Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa.[3] The family is listed as protestant.

The McWilliams, John, Emma, and their daughter Eva, were living at 818 West 4th St North, Newton, Jasper, Iowa in 1930.[10] They were renting the home for $15 a month. John was a coal operator in a mine.

At the time of the 1940 US Census, John, Emma, and Emma's brother, Thomas, were living at 1514 East Walnut, Des Moines, Iowa.[11] They were renting the home for $14 a month. John was a laborer in a flour mill and Thomas was working for WPA Road division.

John was still on Walnut, in Des Moines, Iowa, at the time of the World War II draft registration.[6] There was no telephone in the home. He was working for Inland Milling Company on E 20th and Grand in Des Moines. He was described as white, 5'8.5", brown eyes, 175 pounds, brown and gray hair, a light complexion, and at the time had a cut over his left eye.

John died 6 March 1961 in Des Moines, Iowa.[2] FindaGrave lists him as buried in Highland Cemetery, Mystic, Appanoose, Iowa, but there is no image to validate.[2] His social security was called upon in 1946, and the death date they have listed in notes is 16 Dec 1977.[5]
