Biography

John McWilliams was born 2 February 1827 in Indiana, USA to James Harvey McWilliams and Jane Scanlon.[1][2]

The James McWilliams family was living in Lima, Adams, Illinois in 1850.[2] James was farming and had real estate valued at $1450. The home included James, Jane, and their children: John, William, James, Robert, Joseph, and Elijah.

Some of the boys had left home by 1860.[3] James and Jane were in the household with their sons, John, Joseph, and Elijah. The others weren't far off, all three living right next door for the next three houses, with their young families. All families were farming. James Sr.'s real estate was valued at $1600 and personal effects at $400.

John registered for the US Civil War draft 30th June 1863 in the 4th Congressional district of Illinois, which included Adams County.[4] He is listed as a farmer, born in Kentucky.

The Illinois State census in 1865 lists the McWilliams household with 2 males (James Harvey Sr and John Sr) and 1 female (Jane).[5] They had livestock valued at $500 and grain at $150.

In 1870, John is living with his mother, Jane, in Lima, Adams, Illinois.[6] He was farming and real estate valued at $5500. Their personal effects totaled $400. His brothers were living a few houses away with their families.

John McWilliams and Adelaide Sellick were married 28 January 1873 in Adams County, Illinois.[7]

John and Adelaide were still in Lima in 1880, and had their niece, Addie McWilliams staying with them.[8] John was farming.

John and Adelaide were living in Marceline, Linn, Missouri in 1900, along with their son, John and his new wife, Emma.[9] John Sr was working as a day laborer and John Jr was working as a coal miner.

John passed away 10 February 1907, probably in Missouri.[1]
