Biography

William was born in 1746 in Ireland. According to the genealogical and family history of Jefferson, New York, which does not offer sources, he is said to have been born 26 Oct 1746 in County Down, Ireland. He is said to have sailed for America on 3 June 1772 on the ship Philadelphia, which landed at New Castle Delaware Aug 22 of the same year and then settled in Marbletown, Uslter, NY. He was a weaver by trade. He is said to have married Elizabeth Berry prior to leaving Ireland. [1] (better sources begin sought)

He and Elizabeth Burroughs (as listed in John's birth record linked below - Listed as Barris on FindaGrave.) had at least seven children, as mentioned in his will below. Birth/baptism records have been found for the following:

  • John , baptized 28 Nov 1773 at the Church at Stone Ridge. [2]

Revolutionary War: Court-martial and Sentenced to death and later pardoned

It appears William arrived from Ireland at a tumultuous time. Less than five years after his arrival, he became embroiled in what would later be known as The Marbletown Disaffection of 1777 and was arrested, and court-martialed, found guilty of Levying war against the state of New York within the same Being adherent to the King of Great Britain. and, along with about 30 other men, sentenced to death by hanging. After submitting a petition for mercy, he and the other men were pardoned shortly afterward. [3] [4]

In 1790, William's household in Marbletown consisted of nine people- two males 16 & over; four males <16; and three females[5]
