History and genealogy of the Mead family of Fairfield County, Connecticut, eastern New York, western Vermont, and western Pennsylvania, from A.D. 1180 to 1900

  • From my Grandmother Camilla Coleman Purple Brott's "Hayes Mead" manuscript (compiled in 1942-1944) she noted;

"D.A.R. Nos. 146,211 and 151,473.

In 1780, he married Eliza Bates who was born 5/24, 1755 at Scituate, Rhode Island. According to the 1790 Census, they were at Shaftsbury, Bennington County, Vermont; 4 males under 16, wife and daughter (1-4-2).

In 1795, they moved to Candor, Tioga County, New York , coming by ox team.

In May 1837, they moved to Springfield, Erie County, Pennsylvania.

Israel served 19 months, 23 days in the Revolutionary War, living then in Bennington County, Vermont."

Children: i. William Mead, said to be the first white male born in Candor. (The Indians were there first) ii. Israel Mead, born 1781-1846"

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Israel by comparing test results with other carriers of his ancestors' Y-chromosome or mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Israel:
