"EMERSON MEAD, 59, WAS HEAD OF SCM SPECIAL TO THE NEW YORK TIMES MAY 19, 1976

Emerson E. Mead, former chairman and president of the SCM Corporation, manufacturer of business equipment and other products, died yesterday at his home in New York. He was 59 years old.

Mr. Mead, at his death, was vice chairman and a director of the Electrographic Corporation and a director of the OxyDry Corporation, both of Chicago.

In 1944, he founded the Mead Manufacturing Company in Highland Park, Ill., to make electromechanical switches and timing devices. By 1949, the company had sales of more than $1 million.

In that year Mr. Mead joined Kleinschmidt Laboratories of Deerfield, Ill., now the Kleinschmidt division of SCM. The division makes telecommunications equipment.

Mr. Mead was vice president of Kleinschmidt when it was acquired by Smith‐Corona in 1956. Smith‐Corona became Smith‐Corona‐Marchant Inc. in 1958 with the acquisition of Merchant Calculators.

The concern became the SCM Corporation in 1962, two years after Mr. Mead was elected president, and he directed its entry into the office copier business. In recent years it acquired the Proctor‐Silex Corporation, the Glidden Company, the Allied Paper Corporation and Durkee foods.

When Mr. Mead resigned as chief executive officer of SCM in 1971, it was a broadly diversified corporation with sales of $875 million in business equipment and typewriters, chemicals and coatings, pulp and paper, foods and spices and appliances.

He leaves his wife, the former Eugenic Baird, and four children by a previous marriage, Dennis. Deborah, Charles and Gwendolyn.

A private service will be held tomorrow at 11 A.M. at the Universal, Lexington Avenue at 52d Street."
