Henry Mead was a convict after the Third Fleet transported to New South Wales

Biography

Henry Mead was born in 1811 in Somersetshire, England[1]. There is no record of his parents on his death record.

Henry was a soldier in the 32nd Regiment at Foot, Regiment serving in Canada and convicted of Desertion at the Lower Canada Court Martial in Montreal, He was sentenced to be transported for Life and, with 239 other convicts, departed aboard the "Portsea" on 24 July 1838, arriving in New South Wales on 18th December, 1838[2].

Henry seems to have been in a fairly long term relationship with Mary (Yardley) Craft from before 1852 and lasted at the earliest to after 1860, as their youngest child was born in 1860, and possibly much longer. There is no marriage record but they had five children between 1852 and 1860. Their children were Sarah Meed, Harriet (Mead) Taylor, Mary Mead, Henry Mead and Edward Mead[3].

He was given his TOL (Ticket of Leave Number: 46/0876B) in 1846 and allowed to remain in the District of Brisbane Water[4], and was pardoned in 1852 but there needs to be research to confirm this [5].

Henry died on 2 March 1892 at Ourimbah, Gosford District, New South Wales, Australia[6]and was buried at the St John's Anglican Cemetery, Lisarow, New South Wales, Australia.

On 14 March 1842 The Daily Telegraph (Sydney) published his Death Notice ''MEAD.— Henry Mead, native of Somersetshire, England, died at his residence, Ourimbah, March 2, 1892, aged 80 years. Home papers please copy.[7]
