Biography

John was born in New York on 25 March 1823 (headstone). He was a son of John Mead and Harriet Hurlbut. According to a bio on Find a Grave (News Paper clipping Mankato Regional 10-2-1902), he married Abigail C. Gardner in 1848 and moved to Wisconsin, then to Minnesota in 1857. He died at his home in Blue Earth County on 25 September 1902 and was buried next to his wife at Lake Crystal Cemetery, Lake Crystal, Blue Earth. ^[1][2] Note: User-contributed sources report the middle name for John Mead as Mullford, and the specific wedding date of John Mead and Abigail Clark Gardner as 18 September 1848 (both without evidence).

John Mead, age 26, farmer, had real estate valued at $800, born in New York, living with Abigal and Helen Mead. ^[3]

1860 U.S. Census Place: Garden City, Watonwan Township, Blue Earth County, Minnesota:
John M. Mead, age 33, farmer, born in New York. Living with Abbagil, Ellen, Eugene and Gardner Mead. ^[4]

1870 U.S. Census Place: Ceresco, Blue Earth, Minnesota:

1875 Minnesota State Census, Blue Earth County:
John M. Mead, age 52, born in New York, father born in New York, mother born in Connecticut. Listed immediately after (individual household numbers were not visible on report): Abigail Mead, Helen J. Fogg, Eugene H. Mead, Gardner E.D., Alice L., Fred C. and Effie L. Mead. Listed next was Mary J. Beebe (his sister Jane Beebe's daughter), and a bit farther down the page was Leman A. Pratt. ^[6] Note: On 1 September 1860, Leman Pratt was assigned by Harriet C. Williams (Harriet C. Mead, John M. Mead's mother) a land warrant for a parcel of land in Section 24, Township 106 of Blue Earth County. The relationship between Leman Pratt and Harriet Mead and her family is not as yet understood. He was born in New York, his parents born in Vermont. ^[7] Zacariah Beebe, the husband of Jane Mead Beebe (John M. Mead's sister) was also assigned a parcel of land in Section 20 the same day.

John M. Mead, age 57, farmer, born in New York, parents born in New York, living with Abigal, Gardner, Alice and Fred Mead. ^[8]

1900 U.S. Census Place: Lake Crystal, Blue Earth, Minnesota:
John M. Mead, age 77, born in March 1823, married 51 years, born in New York, father born in New York, mother born in Connecticut, able to read and write, living in a house he owned wothout mortgage with his wife Abigail C. Mead and a servant, Maggie Felix.^[9]
