Biography

ELIHU MEADOR was born in Breckinridge County October 15, 1824. His paternal ancestors were Virginians, his grandfather, Thomas Meador, immigrating to Kentucky many years ago, and settling near Hardinsburg, where his death occurred in an early day. Thomas Meador, Elihu's father, was born in Virginia, but was brought to Kentucky when but a youth, and grew to manhood in Breckinridge County. He was a farmer and miller, and died at his home one mile from Hardinsburg in February, 1880. The maiden name of Elihu's mother was Sallie Snyder. She was the daughter of barksdale Snyder, a native of Virginia, but an early resident of Breckinridge, moving to his farm three miles and a half northeast of Hardinsburg, about the same time the Meador family came to the country; he was a minister of the Baptist Church, a man of great piety, and departed this life as early, perhaps, as 1847. Sallie (Snyder) Meador was born in Virginia and died in Breckinridge County. Seven children were born to Thomas and Sallie Meador, only three of whom are living at this time (1886): Elihu, Mrs. Sallie McCoy and Mrs. Mary Macy. Elihu Meador was reared to manhood on his father's farm, meantime receiving such an education as was afforded in the pioneer schools of the country. At the age of eighteen he embarked in life for himself as a farmer, purchasing a part of his present home farm near Hardinsburg, upon which he has since resided. By diligent application and untiring industry he has brought his farm of 600 acres under a high state of cultivation, and is one of the influential citizens of Hardinsburg District. He has divided his large farm among his children, several of whom reside in the vicinity, and is passing the declining years of his life in quiet and content. He was married, February 23, 1842, to Miss Eliza Lamb, daughter of Abraham and Zilpah (McCoy) Lamb, who has borne him ten children: Sarah (wife of Jubal Hook), Missouri (wife of David Driscoll), James William, Charles, Elizabeth (wife of Thomas Simmons), Taylor, Thomas, Abraham and Elihu, all of whom are living. Mr. and Mrs. Meador are devout members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, belonging to the Antioch congregation.

Elihu's homestead and family were #510 and #511 respectively in the 1850 Breckinridge County Census. Elihu was listed as a 28 year old male with real estate valued at $1000.00. Also listed were: his wife, Eliza, 26 yrs old; Sarah, 8; Missouri, 6; James T, 4; William, 1.

Burial: Meador Cemetery #3 Hardinsburg Breckinridge County Kentucky, USA
