He was Baptised at Saint Cuthberts, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland, parents George Mearns and Helen McGill. [1]

In 1861 the Mearns family lived in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire, Scotland.[2]

James Mearns (21) Fireman married Miriam Braithwait (19) Seamstress, both from Belfast, on 12 June 1865 at St Anne's Church, Belfast, County Antrim, Ireland, fathers Richard Braithwait (Store Keeper) & George Mearns (Gas Works Manager), witnesses Isiah Braithwait and Mary Wallace.[3][4] [5]

Son George was born in Mount Street, Dromore, County Down, James was a Gas Manager.

On 31 March 1901 the Mearns family lived at 26 Reilly Street (West Urban) Banbridge, Down, Ireland. [6]

He passed away in 1910, aged 65, married Gas Manager. Daughter Sarah McEnlay was present at his death. [7] [8]
