Biography

John was born in 1884. John Mearns was seventh of eight children of James and Isabella Mearns née Criggie, and in 1901 was a ploughman at Sillyflat Bothy in Bervie, employed by the family of Peter H Kean and his family.


He was killed on 22 March 1918, the second day of the Kaiserschlacht, the German Spring Offensive, and is remembered on the Arras Memorial in France. His body was never found.
