George Fred served with the Oregon Field Artillery on the Mexican Border from Aug 1916 before being sent overseas to France at the end of Jan 1918 , where he was later to be decorated with the CROIX DE GUERRE for service in support of a French Division at Juvigney from Sept 3rd to Sept 6th . He was seriously gassed in this action , from which he recovered , later to contract Influenza and then Pneumonia from which he eventually died of on 31st Jan 1919 in hospital in France . ( George Fred had arrived in France only a year prior to his death ) . George's body was flown home to the U.S. where he was to receive a full Military Funeral ( with firing squad ) and his body was buried in Laurel Hill Cemetery near his home .
