Heinrich I von Mecklenburg was probably the eldest son of Johann I, Graf von Mecklenburg, and his wife Luitgard von Henneberg. He was perhaps born about 1230, [1] as he and his brother Albrecht are witnessing documents from 25 April 1247.[2]
He succeeded his father as Graf (comes) von Mecklenburg on 1 August 1264 ruling jointly with his brother Albrecht, but Albrecht died in May 1265 and Heinrich ruled alone.[1]
He went on a crusade against the pagan Litthauer in Livonia in 1270 and then undertook a pilgrimage to Jerusalem in 1271, but was captured by Saracens on the way, and was imprisoned in Cairo.[3]
