John Lipscomb Medearis was born in 1858 in Shelbyville, Bedford County, Tennessee. The next year, 1859 his parents Wiley Woodward Medearis and Mary Lipscomb moved to Texas with his brother, wife and other family members, including slaves. Both Mary Lipscomb Medearis and her Aunt Francis Eveline Dean (wife of John Thomas Medearis) died of yellow fever in late October 1859, near Brownstown, Sevier County, Arkansas. They are buried there together in one grave. His Mother Mary Lipscomb was just 17 at her death.
