Biography

Maria was born in early 1841 and baptised on 20 Feb 1848 at Gt Gransden, Hunts, the daughter of Thomas and Mary Medlock.^[1] For some reason she gave an implied birth of 1839 in the censuses when she was married, but her age on marriage was correct.

In 1851 she was living with her parents in Gt Gransden - Thomas Medlock h m 62 ag lab b Eltisley; Mary Medlock wife 42 b Eynesbury; Ann dau unm 17 b Gt Gransden; Maria dau 10 b Gt Gransden; James son 7 b Gt Gransden; Richard Medlock son 4 b Gt Gransden; Jane Medlock dau 1mth b Gt Gransden^[2]

She married William Croft on 11 Nov 1859 at Gt Gransden - William widower and Maria spinster aged 18, father Thomas Medlock.^[3]

William no longer head, died? But Maria is still described as married and shepherd's wife. Perhaps he was just working away.

Research Notes

Maria's father had 15 children over a 41 year period with two wives. Maria was born in 1841 and baptised very late in 1848. She had an older half brother named Thomas born in 1817 who was having children of his own when Maria was born. And of course to confuse matters he named one of them Maria, born also in Gt Gransden, in 1842 and baptised in 1844. Fortunately the mothers had different first names!
