Biography

Year of birth given on marriage document. Two dates appear in the records for the marriage 1 Aug 1887 and 18 Aug 1887. This may be a transcription error. The 1 August is more likely as the spouse name is correct on this record and misspelled on the other.

In 1861 he may have been the Charles Medway, a scholar, living in Narrow Wier, St Mathias, Bristol, Gloucestershire, England. His year of birth is given on this record as 1851[1]. His father is listed as William Medway, a 35 year old butcher. His mother is listed as Mary Ann Medway (Rider), age 42 (born in Dorset around 28 OCT 1821) and siblings: Elizabeth, age 11 (born in the Channel Islands), Robert, age 6 (born in Bristol) and Mary J, age 5 (born in Bristol)

At some stage he moved to Cardiff in Wales where he married Henrietta 1 Aug 1887[2], [3]

In later census records his birth year varies>

  • 1891, he was a Donkey man living in Ivor St, Cardiff, born around 1856[4]
  • 1901 he was a caretaker living in Elm St, Cardiff, born around 1854[5]
  • 1911, he was a caretaker of the Clifton Chapel, Cardiff, living in East Cardiff and born around 1852[6]

British Listed Buildings has a bit about a Clifton Church in Adamsdown, Cardiff, listing it as a gothic chapel located on the corner of Newport Road and Clifton Street. It was built around 1880 as a Presbyterian Chapel[7] This might be the chapel he cared for
