Elizabeth Meek … known as Betsy … was born in the district of Whitburn in Linlithgowshire, Scotland on 10th June 1849.  Betsy was the first child and eldest daughter of John Meek and his wife Janet Cadzow .
On 1st September 1868 Betsy gave birth to a son, James Meek, at Whitburn, Linlithgowshire. Almost two years later … on 25th August 1870 … Betsy married Hugh Gillespie at Croft Head in Fauldhouse, Linlithgowshire.  Over the next 19 years the couple had ten children … the first three born before the family left Scotland, and the last seven after emigrating to New Zealand.
Betsy died at Mosgiel in Otago on 1st September 1919.  Two days later she was buried at East Taieri Cemetery, in the same plot as three of her children who'd pre-deceased her … plus her husband after his death not quite four years later.
