Matthias Meisner was born around 1769 in the Volga Region of Russia, to parents Wendel Meisner and Christina Barbara Trauenfelder. By 1775, his father was deceased, his mother had remarried, and Matthias was living with his mother and stepfather.
In 1788, Matthias and his brother Johann Georg moved to the village of Dinkel.
[2]
By 1798 Matthias had married Anna Elisabeth Schwemmler, possibly Schwemmer, also from Dinkel, and the couple had one son, Markus Georg Meisner, 5 years old.

The family lived next door to Anna Elisabeth's older half-sister, Johanna Schwemmler Müller, wife of Paul Müller.
