Biography

Charles was born about 1784 in Berlin, Prussia. He passed away about 1847.

Charles and six brothers were recruited in Germany by General Bleucher to fight with Wellington at Waterloo. Charles was a Sergeant with the 60th or German regiment (aka. "the Queens Germans". )They arrived after the battle and given transport to England. From England they were offered transport to Halifax, Nova Scotia. They separated at this point for Lunenburg, N.S., Maine, New York and Mass., and Chicago. [1]

Family lore says that Elizabeth and her two eldest children booked passage from Germany to Nova Scotia to join Charles. Unfortunately they were shipwrecked but were thankfully found and taken to Bermuda. When the 'military troubles' ended in Bermuda they became part of a group of military settlers under Captain William Ross who were given the task of settling Sherbrooke (now New Ross). This settlement was located on the military route between Halifax and Annapolis.

The first found land grant for Charles was granted in Sherbrooke, then he purchased a lot in Dutch/Deutch settlement (now Seffernville) about 8km away, where there were other German settlers.

Charles had 14 children who spread out over North America. They would have been in the 1816-1820 period of settlement. The first two children were born in Germany. [2]

The family was counted in the 1871 Census of Canada, as follows. Charles Meister (49); Mary Meister (42); George Meister (20); John Meister (19); Helena Meister (15); Henry Meister (13); Benjamin Meister (11); Arthur Meister (9); Richard Meister (6); Ida Meister (2); Ann Viner (27); John Moser (38); [3]

He was buried at the Christ Anglican Church Cemetery (Old) in New Ross, Nova Scotia. [4]
