Biography

Jean Melanson is the descendant of a Huguenot emigrant.

Jean Melanson was born about 1690. He was the son of Charles Melanson and Marie Dugas.

In 1693, at Port Royal, Jeanne [sic], aged 3, was living with his parents, Charles MELANCON, aged 46, and Marie DUGAS, aged 42, and his seven siblings: Charles, aged 18, Madeleine, aged 16, Marie, aged 12, Francoise, aged 10, Pierre, twin, aged 8, Ambroise, twin, aged 8, and Claude, aged 5. The family owned 4 guns and was living on 35 arpents of cultivable land with 20 cattle, 25 sheep, and 12 pigs.[1]

Jean (23) married Marie Petitot (19) (born about 1694 in Port-Royal; daughter of surgeon Denis Petitot and Marie Robichaud) on 22 Jan 1714 in Annapolis Royal, Acadie, Colony of Nova Scotia. Signed by Charles Melanson and Deni St Sceine.[2][3] Their known children were:

  3. Magdeleine Melanson (1718–1803) .
  4. Marguerite Melanson (1722–1808) .
  5. Claude Melancon (1725–1769) [uncertain].
  6. Charles Melanson (1725–abt. 1800) .
  7. Jean-Baptiste Melanson (1728–1790) .
  8. Pierre Melanson (1730–1763) .
  9. Denis Melanson (1733–1776) .
  10. Isabelle Melanson (1735–abt. 1760) .
  11. Marie Melanson (1744– )

Jean passed away 24 February 1760, aged about 70 and was buried the same day at Cherbourg, Normandy, France.

"Une troisième lignée des Melanson remonte à Jean dit Jani, fils de Charles Melanson et de Marie Dugas. Celui-ci est né vers 1690. Le 22 janvier 1714, à Port-Royal, il prit pour femme Marie-Madeleine Petitot dit Saint-Seine, fille du chirurgien Denis Petitot et de Marie Robichaud."[4]

CENSUS: 1700, as Jeanne, age 10 years.

CENSUS: 1701, age 10 years (sic).
