Biography

Amand Melanson is on the Wall of Names at the Acadian Memorial in St. Martinville, Louisiana Plaque 5 Left. Listed with him is his spouse Anne Babin and 5 children: Joseph, Anne, Simon, Mathurin and Olivier.[1]

Amand Melancon was born 14 Oct 1728. He was the son of Joseph Melanson and Marguerite LeBlanc. He was baptized the day he was born at Saint Charles des Mines, Grand-Pré, Acadia. His godparents were Joseph LeBlanc and Anne Terriot.[2]

He married Marie Anne Babin around 1751 in Grand-Pré, Acadie. [3]

The family was deported to Maryland in 1755. On 7 July 1763 Amand and Marie-Anne were recorded on a census in Baltimore, Maryland with their children Joseph, Anne and Marguerite. [4]

"They were later sent to Louisiana."[5][4]

They immigrated to Louisiana in 1767. [6]

In 1767, at St. Gabriel, where they settled, Amand MELANSON, aged 39, was living with his wife, Anne BABIN, aged 37, and their five children: Joseph, aged 15, Anne, aged 7, Simon, aged 3, Mathurin, aged 2, and newly born, Olivier. Marguerite who was born about 1762 died and before 1767. The family was living on 8 arpents of cultivable land.[5][7]

In 1777, at St. Gabriel, Amand MELANSON, aged 49, was living with his wife, Anne BABIN, aged 47, and one son, two daughters, and one Negro. The family was living on 10 arpents of cultivable land with 20 cattle, four horses, 16 hogs and 30 fowl.[5][8]

Amand died in Dec 1781 in Iberville, Louisiana, New Spain aged ~53 and was buried on 10 December 1781 in St. Gabriel. [9]
