Biography
James was born to Richard Mellen and Elizabeth (birth surname unknown) at Charlestown, Masschusetts Bay on April 3, 1642.[1] He married Elizabeth Dexter and they had at least eight children together.[2] He and John Pratt witnessed a transaction between Christopher and Elizabeth Pickett of Muddy River and Joshua Scottow of Boston on 1 May 1662.
James was "was supposed to be deceased" in 1677. (Charlestown Genealogies, Wyman). A probate inventory was filed in 1680;[3] James Mellen's estate was divided in April 1684 at Middlesex County.

It would seem that Richard and Elizabeth (____) Mellen / Mallin / Millen were likely married in England about 1634 or 1635, and that their children Simon and perhaps also Mary were born there. However, I can find no reference to this marriage in extant, indexed English records.
Per familysearch Richard "Melson" in 1636 to Elizabeth ____ in Tetford, Lincolnshire, but I have not consulted the actual parish register to ascertain whether "Melson" might not be a mistranscription of "Mellon." Also there was a Simon Mallen chr. 1 Nov 1618 at Astesby, Lincs., the son of Richard Mallen. This is too soon to be the Simon "Millen" who appears in Massachusetts records, but the use of that unusual given name is suggestive of a relationship with the Richard Mellen family who migrated to Mass. Bay by 1639; perhaps the 1618 Simon might have been a younger brother of the immigrant.
