George Melrose, 94, Milverton's oldest citizen and for many years a resident of Listowel, died Saturday at Listowel Memorial Hospital. [photo]
He was born in January, 1870, and before moving to Milverton in 1928 he manufactured well-drilling equipment here in Listowel. He also operated an automotive sales and service business in Listowel for several years.
Before is [sic] 1949 retirement, he and his son, Thomas, operated a feed mill in Milverton.
He was a member of St. Paul's United Church, Milverton, and an honorary member of the church session; he was also a life member of the Masonic order.
Surviving besides his wife, the former Helen Jane Gray, whom he married in 1906 in Newcastle, are three sons, George Graydon, Birmingham, Mich.; Thomas and James, both of Milverton; daughters, Mrs. W. G. (Margaret) O'Connell, Malaga, Spain; Mrs. Michael (Jean) Bevans, Kleinburg. Twelve grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive.
A private funeral service was held at the McMane funeral home in Milverton on Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. A. F. Gardner.
Burial was in Fairview Cemetery, Listowel.
