Biography

From Ruby Dolores (Broadus) Cain:

When Ruby Barnes and Jesse Broadus got married, Grandma Shoulders and Grandmother Melton hand loomed a bedspread as a wedding gift (1920). it was white with raised stripes through it. Ruby really prized it, and took extreme care of it. But during that time we moved temporarily to Lake Charles, La. where Jesse worked constructing buildings for the government, and they let a young couple live in the house (the same house that Jerry and Pat lived in where they had the dairy farm, while they (we) were in Louisiana.) They came back to find the house in a real mess, and Mamma's hand woven bedspread was gone. She went to get it from the people that had lived in the house--they had used it for everyday, and it was just about completely destroyed. Mamma saved the pieces and later Frankie cut them up and made pillows and other pieces she put in frames with the story of who made them, etc. I have a pillow and one piece that is in a frame. P.S. Grandma Shoulders was Grandma Melton's mother. So,Grandma Shoulders was Mamma's GREAT Grandmother, and Grandma Melton was Mamma's Grandmother, and Mamma's mother was Dola Barnes--(I hope I've got this right).
