James was born in 1876. He was the son of Henry Melton and Margaret Toole. He passed away in 1950.

James became quite important in the Lands Office at Bathurst. It is believed that, working as a boundary rider, he found the outcrop of dolomite near Lithgow and made a lot of money when the concrete road was built with it. It is also reported that the family travelled to the Melbourne Cup each year in a fleet of Mercedes. Three daughters became nuns.
