Biography

Ancil (Brown) Melton was born on April 24, 1762 in Raleigh, North Carolina[citation needed] to Mary Eliza (Jennings) Brown - Melton, 19, and Arch Melton, 21.

Ancil Melton served in the American Revolution.[citation needed]

In the 1840 census Ansel was in Cannon, Tennessee, United States.[1]

He married Mary (Greer) Huffman in Moore, North Carolina in about 1790. His Will names sons William, James and Elisha ("heirs of"), though he does refer to "the rest of my children" telling us that there were others not named. Other children believed to be theirs are John, Jacob, Mary, Joel, Jesse and Austin.[2]

In the 1790 census Anseel was in Moore, North Carolina, United States.[3]

Ancil Melton bought a 300 acre tract of Land and Orange County, North Carolina, on 29 January 1799. In 1800 he was listed on the Orange County tax list as having 300 acres and one poll. There are no surviving Orange County tax lists for the years 1801 through 1816. He sold this tract of Land situated on the waters of Dry Creek and a little Almance on 11 December 1806. The following year Ancil and Mary Huffman Melton appeared in Warren (later Cannon) County, Tennessee. [4]

According to the History of Woodberry and Cannon County, Tennessee, Ancil Melton, his wife, Mary Huffman Melton, and their seven year old son, John, were among the first group of settlers to arrive in 1807. It appears that the Ancil Melton who resided in Orange County sold all his property there and moved his family to Tennessee. He was not enumerated on the 1820 Census in Orange County. Also living in Orange County in 1800 were John and Daniel Huffman.

He died in 1843 in Cannon County, Tennessee. He is buried at the Melton Cemetery in Cannon County, Tennessee.[5]

DNA

[1] DNA results on Melton family. Melton Steve Melton, a sixth great-grandson of Robert Melton [b. VA- d. 1759 Orange County, NC], tested 111 markers. Steve descends from Robert via Ancel Melton [c1740 Orange County, NC- 1800/1810 Moore County, NC] > James Melton [1774-1840] > Robert Melton [1803-1866] > James Melton [1831-1888] > Eli Melton [1859-1930] > Stephen Melton [Steve’s grandfather]. Also, Howard Melton is a fifth great grandson of Robert Melton > Ancel Melton > James Melton > Hiram Melton [1809 Moore County, NC-1886 McNairy County, TN] > John Quincy Melton [Howard’s grandfather] has been tested. Robert Melton was the progenitor of the Moore County Meltons and is believed to have been born in VA and died in Orange County, NC in 1759. He was the father of many children including James, Nathaniel, Isham, Archelous, Hannah, Mourning, Nathan, Meloney and Ancel. Steve and Howard match several Melton descendants with origins in North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee likely confirming oral history of Robert Melton's descendants migrating throughout the southeast to South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama. Additionally, Carl Brown, a descendant of William Alston Brown [1832-1862] shares the same Y-DNA as the Meltons. William Alston Brown was believed to be the son of Lucy Smith and a Brown male. The Y-DNA match suggests that William Alston’s father or grandfather may have been a Melton rather than a Brown.

Research Notes

??Sources for birthdate?? Pre-merge discrepancies of 1759 vs. 1762, with no sources. He was 60-70 yr of age on 1840 census, making date range 1770-1780, if this is the right man. FAG also indicates DOB circa 1770.
