Biography

David Daniel Melton was born on April 2, 1858 in Jackson County, Alabama to George Thomas Melton and Tabitha Russell Melton. He married Nancy Susin French on January 22, 1880. After their marriage David farmed in Jackson County, Alabama. About 1893 the family moved west to Hill County, Texas, where he farmed in the Brandon and later the Midway communities. In 1917, David and Nancy moved to a rented farm east of Lorenzo in Crosby County, Texas. In 1932, no longer able to farm, he and Nancy moved to the nearby farm of their son-in-law and daughter, Frank and Delma Mae Himmel.

According to his grandson, Irvin Himmel, "Grandpa was a bit cranky and sometimes lived to himself in a little house in our backyard. He called it his 'shack.' A lover of honey and Brown Mule chewing tobacco, he entertained me with stories about his youthful years back in 'Alabam.'[1]

After the death of his wife in 1938, David moved his "shack" to the home of his son, Elbert Melton, in Ralls, Crosby County, Texas. David Daniel Melton passed away on September 2, 1942. He was buried next to his wife in the Crosbyton Cemetery, Crosby County, Texas. [2]
