Biography

Jemima, or Mima, as she was known, was born on 12 June 1873, in Tarland, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Her parents were John Melvin (1829-1905) and Margaret Mary Brebner (1835-1926).

In 1894 Mima set off for Canada on her own, destination Calgary. She left Glasgow on 11 May 1894 and arrived in Montreal on 23 May 1894. The ship she travelled on was the Buenos Ayrean. Her occupation was domestic servant.

By December 1895 Mima had met and married John Goodman Maxwell Lowndes, another recent British immigrant who came from Devon, England. He ended up in the real estate business while the family lived in Calgary. They lived at first in what became the neighborhood of Bridgeland-Riverside. Then around 1914 they moved across town to 1st Street S.E. They did not seem to stay at any one place for very long.

In 1920 the family moved across the mountains to the Okanagan where they took up ranching for a few years at Skaha Lake. John had relatives living in Kamloops so that may have been one of the attractions. After they left the ranch, Mima and John retired to the town of Penticton. John died in 1945 and Mima in 1946. They are buried at Lakeland Cemetery in Penticton.

Passes Away

The death occurred on April 16 in Penticton Hospital of Mrs. Mimi Lowndes, 72. She had been a resident of Penticton for the past twenty-five years.

Funeral services took place on Wednesday, April 16, from the Anglican Church, with the Rev. W. S. Beames officiating. Internment took place in Lakeview cemetery.

She is survived by two daughters and two sons, Mrs. H. Colvin, Calgary, Alta; Mrs. M. Fripp, Vancouver, B.C; Matthew Maxwell Lowndes and John Arthur Lowndes, of Penticton.
