Biography

Joseph was born 19 March 1769, the son of Joseph Ménard and Marie Amable Sabourin, and baptized "sous condition" at St-Joseph de Chambly the next day.[1] [2]

His marriage to Marie Desanges Stebbin was 24 September 1798 at Saint Mathias, Rouville, Bas-Canada. According to the parish register, the marriage was between "Joseph Ménard garçon majeur habitant de St-Jean Baptiste fils de feu Joseph Ménard aussi habitant du dit lieu et de Marie Amable Chaunière dite Sabourin ses père et mère d'une part et Maries des anges Stébenne fille majeur de Louis Stébenne habitant de cette paroisse et de Marie Des Anges Mailloux son épouse ses père et mère d'autre part . . . . en présence de François Maurice, Noël et Charles Ménard frères, George Poulin beau-frère, Jean Baptiste Chaunière cousin, Joseph Vadnais ami de l'époux et de Louis Stébenne père, Louis Stébenne frère, Toussaint Mailloux ayeul, Charles Vient, Antoine Vient, Jean Baptiste Stebenne oncles, François Leclaire, François [?], Charles Vient et Augustin Tétrau cousins Germains, Jean Baptiste Parent cousin aussi Germain de l'épouse et de plusieurs autres parents et amis qui tous on déclaré ne savoir signer de ce enquis suivant l'ordinance lecture faite."[3][2]

He passed away 9 December 1842 and was buried the next day, according to the parish register: "Joseph Ménard ancien cultivateur, veuf de Desanges Stébenne, de cette paroisse, décédé la veille, âgé de soixante quinze ans. Présents Jean Baptiste Tétreau et Louis Ménard."[4]
