Biography

Birth and Adoption

Marie-Charlotte D'Argentcoeur was born either 3 or 13 March 1742, the illegitimate daughter of a couple of First Peoples descent. Her biological father was Charles D'Argentcoeur (Isáŋyathi') the Sioux servant of Antoine Ménard. Her biological mother was Charlotte Rondeau (Roguindauqui dit Lafleur), the Métisse servant of Clément-Charles Sabrevois de Bleury.[1][2][3]

Her conception from the union of two servants of different proprietors resulted in a court case that created documentation regarding secondary evidence supporting the origins of both of her parents.[4]

The final result of these legalities was her adoption by her fathers proprietor, Antoine Ménard and his wife Marie Huet. According to a history written by one of her descendants, her adoptive father Antoine Ménard was a maternal relative of Charlotte's biological mother. The history goes on to recount how her biological father Charles later served as an interpreter for the French and was hired out as a voyageur to Michilimackinac, where much of his time was spent away from his daughter. However her ties to her father would prove closer than those to her mother, where the history reports nothing further of her mother, her father is said to have lived a long life, dying at Montreal in 1807 aged some 80 years.[5][6]

Adoptive Parents

Antoine Ménard dit Montour and Marie Huét dit de Lude.
