James Mendenhall was born 16 February 1784 in Deep River, Guilford Co., North Carolina.[1]
James was never fond of going to school, so much that upon one occasion he left and went to splitting rails; was very fond of hard work; he became a miller by trade, and delighted in wagoning and farming. In 1813 his wagon was pressed by an officer of the United States into public service at Richmond, Virginia while he was there hauling cotton, with his brother, George C. In 1815 while at Baltimore his wagon was again pressed into public service, and he then sold it to the government of the United States. In the first instance he received pay from the government for all the time the wagon was in service. He volunteered in the War of 1812 and was the first to enlist, but never served as he was never called upon. He was disowned by the Society of Friends. He was very remarkable for his honesty and uprightness: he was 6 feet high and weighed 180 pounds.
James married Betsy Reed in 1805 Guilford, North Carolina. James was disowned by the Deep River, North Carolina Quakers on 3 March 1806 for marrying out of unity. James and Betsy would have 7 children.[2]
James passed away in October 1831[3]
