Nathan never had over twelve months of schooling in his entire life. He started working at his father's mills at 16 years of age and continued there for 20 years. Upon his marriage, his father gave him 100 acres of land in the forks of Deep River and this was all the property that he ever possessed except what he earned by his own hands. All the property that he accumulated after his marriage was gained after the sun had gone down and before it rose again. He remembered seeing, when some five years of age, Lord Cornwallis with his staff encamped on Deep River on a hill within sight of his father's mill, together with one division of the British Army. He recollects hearing the cannons roar on the day of the Battle of Guilford Courthouse.
