Biography

Birth

On the death of Murdach, the second Earl of Menteith, in or shortly before 1213, two brothers, both named Maurice, appeared as competitors for the earldom. Although it is likely, from their immediate claim following the Earl's death that they were in fact his sons, this has not been definitively proved. While the senior Maurice had claimed the earldom, his legitimacy may have been in question, with Maurice junior, the legitimate and rightful heir.[1] This litigation was brought before King William I and was amicably settled in favor of the younger Maurice. It was, however, the first of numerous disputes regarding the earldom of Menteith.[1][2]

Marriage & Issue

Maurice had an unknown wife; their marriage produced the following issue:[1][2]

Notable Events

Although Maurice was not consistently politically active throughout his life, he and six other Earls were present at Scone at the coronation of Alexander II on 6 December 1214 and again on 10 December for the interment of Alexander's father, William I. On 5 September 1224, Maurice was granted a charter by Alexander to the Abbey of Paisley and by 27 March 1226, Maurice was recorded as the Sheriff of Stirling.[1]

Death

Maurice was deceased before January of 1233/34.[2] The location of his burial is unknown.

Isabella DeMentieth is listed as a daughter but since her birth date is given as 1180 this won't work, that's 15 years before Murdoch.

Menteith-13 and Menteith-11 appear to represent the same person because: same basic name and father
