Biography

Sir Charles Granville Stuart-Menteth of Closeburn, 1st Bt. was born on 15 May 1769. He was the son of Reverend James Stuart-Menteth and his wife Catherine Maria Wheler.

He was baptised on 18 Jun 1769 in Barrowby, Lincolnshire, England, probably by his father, the Rev. James Menteth.

He lived at Closeburn and Mansfield. Charles acquired the lands of Mansfield in the parish of New Cumnock in the early 19th century and in 1838 he became the 1st Baronet of Closeburn and Mansfield. He worked the coal, lime and clay reserves on his Mansfield estate and was recognised as a major land improver in the county. [1]

The Stuart-Menteth family traces its descent from Walter Comyn (third son of Walter Comyn, Justiciar of Scotia), who in 1258 married Isabella, Countess of Menteith (or Menteth). Currently, the baronetcy is listed as vacant on the Official Roll of the Baronetage as the 7th Baronet has not yet proved his succession.

Charles passed away on 3 December 1847 at age 78.

Marriage

Sir Charles Granville Stuart-Menteth of Closeburn was married to Ludivina Loughnan, daughter of Thomas Loughnan and Philadelphia Fergusson, on 13 September 1791.

Stuart-Menteth-19 and Menteth-14 appear to represent the same person because: Obvious Duplicate LNAB should be Menteth
