Donald was born in 1877. He is the son of John Menzies and Elizabeth Lowe. Donald settled at Glencoe, South Australia. Donald is said to have registered the pedigree of his family in Scotland. After the death of Sir Neil Menzies, Baronet and Chief, in 1910, Donald Menzies was amongst the Menzies descendants invited by lawyers to claim the Menzies estate.
