Research Notes

Further research conducted and an article written in December 2005 by Geoffrey B West in the United Kingdom, states: Geoffrey West-6495 -

'Captain William had just four children. His eldest another William born 1812 had one child only, a son, also called William who emigrated to Canada as set out in detail in David’s article, leaving his father’s three siblings at home. Kenneth 1818/1861, Emily 1822/1897 and John Edward 1824/1867. Death details sent to me in 2001 quoted records that Emily died at 8.30pm 8 August 1897 at 16 Coates Gardens, Edinburgh. Causes of death : Cerebral Hemorrhage 3.5 months Asthenia. certified by James Richie MD Reg'd on 9 th August by George F Bryce WS Law Agent 2 Albyn Place, Edinburgh. Of the last child, John Edward very little has been found. He was born 8th March 1824 and he died 7th May 1867 in Wanderwrang Cottage, Dunblane, unmarried and intestate. Probate was granted to his sister Emily Menzies and a summary of his estate gave a value of £9178.'

His sister Emily Menzies was born 19th June 1822 and died 8th August 1897. She married Richard Simpson and on the 1881 census they are at 16 Coates Gardens Edinburgh. Richard Simpson is described as aged 61, an upholsterer employing 17 men, 3 women 15 boys and 11girls. Emily, his wife aged 48, uphosterers’ wife. They had no children, at least none who survived. Her Will or Settlement available on the internet has some fascinating entries. There is a family connection with the Hardinges of Kent, Baronets, and her will appointed Sir Edmund Hardinge of Fowlers Park, Hawkhurst, Kent and Edward Hardinge Admiral in the Royal Navy as two of her executors. She left £2000 between the six Cousins in the USA, ie William Bradford Hardinge Campbell Menzies, Sarah Catherine Menzies, Kenneth Campbell Menzies Henry Charles Menzies, Edward Bruce Menzies, Annie Beatrice Menzies, all residing at Hickory, North Carolina USA. These all appear on Dr David A Matthewes family tree and on the Census returned already mentioned. I was also delighted to see a bequest to my grandfather and his brother, sons of my niece who was the daughter of my brother Kenneth Menzies.'
