Catherine Menzies was born at the Rawer Village and baptised on 19 Apr 1800 in Dull Parish, Perthshire, Scotland.[1] She was the daughter of Robert Menzies and Isabel Boyd.
The village of Rawer, about a half mile north of the main road at Weem, and 700 yards east of Shenavail.
Rawer Village was located on the moor above the Aileen Chraggan Hotel. The remains of the village are still there and can be reached by the pathway up over Weem Hill from the Chraggs Hotel or via the Glassie Farm at Boltachan. Rawer Village was famous for its whiskey still, and many a delivery pathway from the moor to the rear entrances of hotels within the Strathtay to evade the excise men. This whiskey still is said to have been the forerunner of the now famous Dewars Whiskey in the town of Aberfeldy.
