Biography

George Mercer was born in 1837 in Newton Garth, a farmstead in Paull Parish but half way to Hedon.. He is the son of David Mercer and Elizabeth Hosdill.

1837 Preston nr Hull. Note: 1851 index. (It is just about possible to be born in Preston Parish but with Paull as the closest village. It is much more likely that he was born in the one but spent his childhood in the other (three miles away on the opposite side of the small town of Hedon.)

Occupation: Farmer 140 acres 1881 Ulrome : Miller 1875 Leven.

In 1871 in East Street Leven a few miles north of Ellerby, George Mercer 33 b Newton Garth is a miller employing 2 men: with him is his brother Robert 41 born Withernwick and his sister Eliza 30 b El[l]erby : clearly these are all children of David Mercer and Elizabeth Hosdill. Newton Garth is a hamlet or farmstead half way between Paull and Hedon.^[1]

Hannah Clappison married George Mercer on 7th January 1875 in Wawne nearby, where at that time a ferry crossed the River Hull. ^[2]

Farming 1881 Ulrome

By 1881 George and Hannah Mercer had moved with their young son to Ulrome near Skipsea on the North Sea coast. This was not a great distance but a smaller, quieter village and a new lifestyle Farmer Of 140 Acres . ^[3]
