Walter Frederick Mercer was born in 1876 in Leven, a large village half way between Beverley and Hornsea to the east, and also on the Low Road from Hull in the south to Bridlington in the North. [1] Walter is the son of George Mercer at this time a miller in the busy village and his wife Hannah Clappison. [2]
By 1881 Walter's father is no longer a miller living in Leven, but a farmer with 140 acres in Ulrome near Skipsea on the North Sea coast. Not a great distance but a great change. [3]
Walter Frederick Mercer married Sarah Elizabreth Bell in 1910, probably in Ulrome and certainly in a village in the Bridlington area, ref> freebmd Marriages Mar 1910 BELL Sarah Elizabeth @@Bridlington 9d 577 MERCER Walter Frederick @@Bridlington 9d 577
