Her LNAB is probably NOT Sarah Mercer which was a misinterpretation of her 1881 census return. It has been retained temporarily in the hope of finding a correct name at birth.

Sarah J Pickard is a widow and dressmaker in New George St. in the centre of Hull with two daughters, both scholars 1871. [1]
Smith Mercer, 72 and out of employ is revealed as the unmarried father of David Smales, 38 a merchant's clerk, and NOT of his housekeeper Sarah Pickard, and thus NOT grandfather of her daughter Kate A Pickard, also out of employ. [2] .
