Biography
Mary Jane was born on 22 February 1844 in Nelson, New Zealand. She was the oldes daughter of Samuel Mercer and Margaret Unknown.
She was a maternity nurse before marrying Charles Smith in 1875.[1] They lived in Nelson and had the following children:
- 1880/2257 Smith Margaret Kate
- 1882/11274 Smith Samuel Mercer
- 1878/1503 Smith Albert Charles
- 1876/2456 Smith Thomas John Murray
She continued to live in Nelson until around the age of 84 when she moved to Newman, Eketahuna to live with her son Albert and daughter in law.[2]
She died aged 98 in 1942.[3]
