Biography

The 13 Jan. 1848 issue of the Adams County Democrat (West Union, Ohio) contains a legal notice concerning a partition of land owned by Simon Mercer, deceased, filed in Adams Co., Ohio, on 10 Jan. 1848. It contains a seemingly complete listing of Simon's children, as well as other who had an interest in the land. In the notice, the names are grouped by location, whereas here they are grouped roughly by birthdate. William Mercer, born about 1800, is often included as a son of Simon, but his name is not in this list.

The property to be partitioned was described as: "situate in the County of Adams and State of Ohio, on the waters of the east fork of Brush creek: Beginning at a white oak northwest corner of Charles Morgans Survey No. 2273 and in the line of Winslows survey No. 1993, thence with his line North 80 [sic] degrees West 130 poles to two white oaks corner to Daniel Hills tract of land, thence with his line South 9 degrees West (crossing Flat run and passing Hills corner) 164 poles to a stake in the original line, thence with the same South 81° East 130 poles to a stake on the line of said Morgans Survey No. 2273, thence with the line of the same North 9 degrees East (crossing Flat run) 164 poles to the beginning, containing one hundred and thirty three Acres being a part of a survey of 380 Acres No. 8909 which was patented to George Vinsonhaler on the 1st day of October AD 1831"

A Notice in the United States' Gazette (Philadelphia, PA), 30 June 1804, reads: "I will let upon short or long leases, the following farms, all lying in New Castle county, state of Delaware, within from five to six miles of the town of New Castle, five miles from the village of Christiana bridge and nearly opposite Salem in New Jersey. . . . A farm on the west side of the RedLion Tavern, now occupied by Simon Mercer. . . . Possession . . . may be had . . . on the 25th March next."[2]
