William Mercer was born in about 1809 in St Helens, Lancashire. He was the son of Silvester Mercer and Mary (Glover) Mercer.
By June 6th 1841, the family was living in Eccleston. William's mother wasn't with them, so is likely to have died before then. William's father was a land surveyor. The family had one servant, Ann Parr. No occupation was recorded for William.
By March 30th 1851, William was living in Golborne, Lancashire and working as a land and mine agent. He was still single. He had a housekeeper, Jane Fairhurst, and two other servants, Elizabeth Fairhurst and Elizabeth Burrow.
By April 7th 1861, William was boarding in Buxton, Derbyshire, and working as a land agent. He was still unmarried.
William's father died in 1861 in Prescot district, aged 82.
