George was born on 19 April 1767. He was the son of George Mercer.[1]
George died at the age of 73 on 26 May 1840 in Galashiels, Selkirk, Scotland.[1][2][3]
On an unknown date George was employed at Deacon, Manufacturers and Dyers Corp., Galashiels, 1808.[4]
George Mercer established the first mill in Galashiels in 1791 and may have been the first to use indigo dyes. By 1825 there were nine mills. It is unclear as to what time George Mercer first came to Galashiels, but previous to that he tenanted the cord and waulkmill which at one time existed at Elwand foot. He is first mentioned in the woolen trade in 1775. His brother, Adam, was tenant in the farm of Bow on Gala Water and in 1791 qualified himself for admission into the Manufacturers Corporation. Wilderhaugh Burn Mill was occupied by George Mercer in 1780 who was called a clothier. George Mercer introduced the carding machine.
George Mercer's firm was known as George Mercer and Sons. They did very well at that time. In 1811, the factory was destroyed by fire. Their friends and neighbors came to their aide. In 1819 another fire occurred and it was again rebuilt. However, the following year, George Mercer died. When Thomas took over the firm fell. After the death of Thomas, the factory came into the hands of the trustees.[5][6][7]
