I did a DNA test through my heritage initially to find my mother’s side of the family, because I didn’t have a lot to go on as she was brought up in a children’s home. I have no idea who my maternal Grandfather was. I knew who my maternal grandmother was, although I never met her, I knew the names of her siblings and I knew the name of my great grandfather, and I knew where they lived, that was all I had to go on.
My search initially was done the old fashioned way by ordering up birth and marriage certificates and visiting churches, I managed to trace my maternal ancestors, and what a journey it has been. It wasn’t long before I found that my maternal ancestors had high standing. The DNA test that I took really gave my search a boost, my Heritage and Geni have been extremely useful in helping me find my family. I set myself the goal of finding out, and on my maternal side I found out that:
John I "Lackland", King of England is my 22nd great grandfather.
Henry II "Curtmantle", king of England is my 23rd great grandfather.
Alfred the Great, king of The Anglo-Saxons is my 34th great grandfather.
Arnulf I the Great, count of Flanders is my 32nd great grandfather.
Henry I "Beauclerc", King of England is my 25th great grandfather.
William "the Conqueror", King of England is my 26th great grandfather.
David I, King of Scots is my 25th great grandfather.
Sigtrygg "Silkbeard" Olafsson, King of Dublin & York is my 29th great grandfather.
Leofwine, Ealdorman of the Hwicce is my 28th great grandfather. To name but a few…
My paternal side my search has been easier in some ways and harder in other ways I found out that:
Elder William Brewster, "Mayflower" Passenger is my 11th great grandfather.
Sir William XIII (Keeper of the Forest of Dene) Hathaway is my 14th great grandfather. Hugh Fitz de Haute, de Hautesbourne is my 22nd great grandfather. To name but a few…

The Relationship Finder in Wikitree is a wonderful thing.
Apparently we are 8th cousins, twice removed, with common descent from Thomas Whitebread (<1662 - <1749)
Probably even closer. I agree that my Charles Whitebread (1756-1823) is the same person as your Charles Whitehead. I'll look for more sources to add to my profiles. I am tempted to renew my membership of the Wiltshire Historic Society.
Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.
Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.
We are so happy you decided to upgrade to the Family Member level.
Please visit our tutorial pages to learn how to use WikiTree: How To Use WikiTree. They will save you time, energy, and frustration as you add your family profiles.
Exploring the site is the best way to learn. One way to do that is to check out the drop-down menus on the top right side of your profile page. Finding a known ancestor and collaborating with the profile manager is another great way to start.
