Biography

Birth

Frerik|Frederick Merkel|Markle was born ca. JUN 1734. Frederich was baptised as Frerik on 30 Jun 1734 at the First Reformed Protestant Dutch Church in Kingston, Ulster, Province of New York. He was the son of Matthias Merckel and Margaretha Kehl .[1] His baptismal sponsors were Coenraat Regtmeyer and Barbara Alman. Frederick as baptised by Domine Vas. Barbara Alman was his paternal grandmother ( Hoes 4360). [2]

The History of Ulster County by Sylvester (pages 70-75, Chapter XVI. The War of the Revolution) Among the first prominent events in the history of Ulster County during the American Revolution was the signing of the Articles of Association adopted by the citizens of the city of New York who were favorable to cause of liberty. On April 29, 1775 ten days after the battle of Lexington, "The Freemen, Freeholders, and Inhabitants of the City and County of New York " adopted a bod and manly article of general association, which was transmitted to all the counties in the State for subscribes. When it reached Ulster County, many openly declared it treason, while others refused to take either side, or absented themselves so that the Whigs could have no opportunity to importune them; yet by far the greater number immediately re-echoed the sentiments of their brethren in the rights of man, and wrote their names to the Articles of Association. Among these were : Fredrick Merkle of Marbletown Jacobus H. Bush is listed before him. Frederick applied for Land Bounty Rights in Ulster County for military service endered during the American Revolution. Per History of Ulster County, New York by Sylvester (page 295) : Listed is a Frederick Markle in the Marbletown Tax Roll dated May 10, 1794 with real estate valued at 70 pounds and personal property valued at L20.

Markle-439 and Merckel-178 appear to represent the same person because: Both profiles represent the same person...Dest. should be Merckel-178...closest to the name his father used for his baptism and the baptisms of his siblings. Markle evolved later.

Given name was Frerik; Frederick|Frederich he used during life.
